So, when I got invited to another pirate party I was immediately haunted by the ghosts of pirate costumes past. Strange and terrifying ghosts they were, terrible to behold. Never again I swore, never again would I try to be a 'realistic' pirate only to find myself appallingly uncomfortable and unattractive to boot. This time I would be the cutest pirate you ever did see, this time I would be a pin-up pirate. I needed just one thing. Just one perfect accessory. The smallest tricorn hat evah!

The only flaw in my otherwise completely brilliant plan is that I don't really know how to make hats. As such I ended up approaching this more as some kind of crazy prop making exercise. Just as well it didn't need to actually fit over my head. I used a core of aluminium wire mesh in a sandwich of felt. I built a raised 'crown' from circles of batting and then covered the whole with black velvetine. My crappy Warehouse mesh decided to break at some point around here so I ended up wiring the brim as well. Fortunately for my sanity that worked fine and the hat held its shape. I used satin bias binding to cover the edges and then it was all about the trim, baby!

I found a trim that had a double row of diamantes in a black surround that really brought the bling. The little heart is an ex-earing from a bag of junk jewelery my father gave me a while ago. The spectacular striped feathers were also courtesy of my father (they're real, not dyed! omg!). Pirates have no sense of too much, and neither do pin-up girls so I just kept trimming and my hat also gained a ribbon at the back (scavenged off some long ago present) and a veil. The veil, I am sad to say, still needs some work. It's really too long and the shape isn't quite right. Unfortunately it needs to be cut on my head and I'm not game to do that in a mirror (come back, Giffy! I need you!). The whole thing from start to finish took me about a week.

My wee tricorn is fastened to my head just by a comb, which I think technically makes it a fascinator. I'm hoping the local fascinator-haters will forgive my poor wee hat and not come after it with scissors. :P Photos courtesy of the dread Cap'n Dagger, post typed up courtesy of my long suffering, much put upon Jarratt, as my hand is still not better.

I love my hat. ^__^
