Gifts

So, yes, I have been a complete failure at updating this lj. Or, indeed, my non-craft lj. A complete lack of journal posts all round. Blame twitter - it's caused me to start thinking in 140 character blocks. ;)

After a firm poking from Giffle, though, I'm going to try and be good and catch up on some of the things I've made, and start posting once a week on the progress on the things I'm working on.

Round up number one - Some little gift projects I made over the last much-too-long:

For Emma's birthday I got a little silly. Emma likes 'dolling' in the graphics sense, and also pixels little bears. She'll talk about the new doll or new bear she's made (and they're always lovely - she's very talented) - and I couldn't resist dolling in my way for her. ^__~

I used Julie McCullough's 'Blossom and Twig' pattern to make a doll of Emma's OC Xanthorra. I've made up this pattern once before, and then, in the intervening years, conveniently forgotten what a total pain in the ass it is to turn the limbs on one of these dolls. TOO TEENSY. zomg. Still, I think Xanth worked out ok - Emma seemed completely thrilled with her when she arrived. I didn't use the wings as provided on the pattern, and I invented a little blouse and skirt for her. If I make up this doll again, though, I'm doing the legs a different way. She's a little harder to sit nicely than I'd like.

This little guy may well be my favourite bear I've ever made. He gives my enormous black and white Asuran-bear a real run for his money! I used the pattern from a mini-bear kit I bought years and years ago - 'Mr. Frobisher' by Victorian Rose. Only problem is, the pattern doesn't specify the materials required, so I had to figure out the joint sizes purely by trial and error. -__-;

I actually wanted to make Emma a pale lilac mohair mini-bear - except it turns out the mohair range available locally has shrunk to practically nothing in the time since I last looked. I would have been lucky to find a decent range of browns, let alone a nice lilac! So, I went through my scrap bin, and decided the leftover rainbow dyed wool from a skirt I made a while ago would make a nice bear. And so it did. It was really hard to pack him up and send him away.

Also, Shya found him delicious. XD

A good long time ago, I signed up for a craft-exchange meme, that we then all promptly ignored. We had a year! A luxury of time! It's really no wonder no one got anything finished on time. I've now done three of my promised four projects (the last is in a half-finished state in the sewing room). The artwork for Gabbi doesn't seem like craft to me, really, and therefore won't be posted here - but I've also now made Sally a white kitty-ears hat that makes her match two of her own sweet little kitties. I think it's an improvement on the first kitty ear hat I made - the ears are much more distinctly kitty-like, and less likely to be accused of being some kind of rodent by smartass biologists. ^^;

For the same craft-exchange, I made the lovely Jenni this book. I was going to make her something else altogether, but I'm really glad I switched to making this. It's a coptic bound book with bright blue stitching, but otherwise quite classic. The pretty purple leather for the cover was a really nice find - I had every intention of using it for a book for myself, but managed to make myself give it to Jenni instead. I think it came out rather elegantly.

Heh. It's true that animal-ear hats get a heck of a lot of comments. Never wear one if you want to go incognito! XD

I'm really glad you (and your kitties) like it. ^^
